Chemins de fer du Jura
"A red train, Glovelier Station and not a cloud in the sky. I board the train to cross the Franches-Montagnes. The route runs uphill all the way to Saignelégier. The train sidles between the rocks through the Tabeillon valley like a snake in the grass. Then we reach the plain interspersed with small valleys, where I admire the Jura farms, the Franches-Montagnes horses and cows, the ponds and, towering above them all, the majestic spruce trees standing like wooden statues beside a royal Roman road. We arrive in Saignelégier, where a lot of travellers board and leave the train. There are people with scooters, bikes and even E-bikes. Then the train rattles and continues on its way. Every so often, the railway line branches off from the road, allowing the onlookers to discover the magic of the landscape. As I leave the little train in La Chaux-de-Fonds, I am still enchanted by all the things I have seen."
The Chemins de fer du Jura (CJ) network mainly serves the plateau of the Franches-Montagnes and the Porrentruy - Bonfol line in Ajoie. Porrentruy, Glovelier, Tavannes and La Chaux-de-Fonds are the stations offering access to the CJ network. With 74 kilometres of narrow-gauge track in the Franches-Montagnes and the Bernese Jura, the CJ railways open up vast recreational areas to hikers, cyclists and, in winter, cross-country skiers.
